Shock Drop Two Over The Weekend

July 30 San Antonio at Tulsa

The San Antonio Silver Stars were red hot as they shot better than 60 percent from the floor, handing the Tulsa Shock their sixth straight defeat, 101-85 at the BOK Center on Friday Night.

The Silver Stars shot a season high 63.2 percent from the field, nearly 20 percent higher than their average road shooting percentage.

“There were times when I thought we were in their face and they still made the shot,” Head Coach Nolan Richardson said. “It was just a good performance by the opposing team.”

Ivory Latta picked up 19 points for the Shock, her seventh time in eight games to score in double figures. Rashanda McCants recorded her first points in a Shock uniform, hitting a pair of threes late in the fourth quarter.

The Shock went on an 11-0 run in 1:50 in the first quarter after trailing 4-2. The nine point lead would be their largest of the game. San Antonio tied the game at the end of the first and never looked back, leading by as many as 21 points.

The Silver Stars had six players scored in double figures, led by Becky Hammon’s 22-point outing. All five starters scored at least 11 points.

August 1 Tulsa at Washington

The Tulsa Shock scored just nine points in the first quarter and weren’t able to get back on track as they fell to the Washington Mystics 87-62 at the Verizon Center on Monday. President Barack Obama was on hand to see his hometown Mystics take a 33-9 lead in the second quarter. Tulsa was able to cut the lead to 19 at the end of the first half, but shot just 27 percent in the first 20 minutes.

“First of all, we couldn’t buy a basket,” Head Coach Nolan Richardson said. ”We couldn’t get into a rhythm of anything. The thing that kind of changed the rhythm was that we got into more of a pressure defense to kind of get after it so we could at least compete from a standpoint of getting up and down the floor and maybe get something that gets us a chance to have a layup. At halftime, we only had three players to have scored any baskets. That’s not typical so we could never get started.”

Tiffany Jackson was the only Shock player to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points and a team high seven rebounds. Washington saw six different players score in double figures.

“They’ve got tremendous talent,” Richardson said. “Tonight they really played well. They shot the ball well against us. Katie (Smith) had a phenomenal [game]. I don’t think she’s had that kind of a night in Tulsa that she had today shooting the basketball. When you shoot it well and you hit the boards the way they hit the boards you have a chance to win almost every game.”
