Los Angeles Sparks Name General Manager Penny Toler Vice President

Los Angeles Sparks co-owners Kathy Goodman and Carla Christofferson announced that nine year veteran General Manager Penny Toler was named Vice President of the Los Angeles Sparks. Toler, who started her career with the Sparks as a player in the 1997 inaugural season, was named General Manager in 1999 and has led the Sparks to back to back WNBA Championships, (2001, 2002). She is also responsible for building play-off teams in eight of her nine seasons as General Manager.

As Vice President, Toler will retain the title of General Manager and continue with her day to day management of basketball operations but will also be instrumental in the management of business operations for the organization. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to continue doing what I love with basketball operations while also contributing to the success of our business operations,” said Toler.

Toler’s success as General Manager made her the obvious choice for the position. In just two years, Toler became the fastest person in any men’s or women’s professional sports league to win a championship after being named General Manager from player status.

“Penny’s dedication to the Sparks organization over the past 12 years has been incredible. Even through changes in ownership, she has been able to consistently build winning teams and we’re confident that her impact as Vice President will only enhance what the Sparks have to offer,” said Sparks co-owner Kathy Goodman.

The Washington D.C. native is widely known as being the first player to score a basket in WNBA history and she is also the only female athlete to have her jersey retired at the STAPLES Center.
