Sun Awards Bright Horizons Scholarship

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (August 17, 2010) – The Connecticut Sun Foundation announced today that Kacper Szarek has been selected as the fourth recipient of a $10,000 Bright Horizons Scholarship.

A graduate of Middletown High School, where he was president of the National Honor Society and a member of the tennis and swim teams, Szarek also volunteers as a Special Olympics coach. He will attend Fairfield University this fall as a business major and plans to study economics.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive a scholarship from a foundation that supports young people who are trying to be successful in their endeavors,” said Szarek, who was recognized Tuesday at halftime of the game between the Sun and Tulsa Shock at Mohegan Sun Arena. “I was shocked at first. I didn’t think I’d be selected out of all the candidates.”

Past Bright Horizons Scholarship recipients include Rebecca Wilcox, Audrey Sperry and Christina Mezes.

All Bright Horizons Scholarship candidates were required to provide information detailing their leadership abilities through community service and extracurricular activities, along with two letters of recommendation referencing academic and community achievements. They also submitted a 500-word essay describing the greatest challenge in their community, and how they hoped to make a positive change.

Bright Horizons Scholarships are awarded annually to a deserving Connecticut high school senior who will attend an accredited four-year college or university in the state. The Bright Horizons Scholarship is a cornerstone initiative of the Connecticut Sun Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of Connecticut’s youth by supporting athletic and educational endeavors.
